Right now, my focus is on helping people overcome their nearsightedness. Being myopic, it was natural for me to focus on overcoming nearsightedness. It is a continual process to improve and refine my understanding to make it easier for others to improve.

If you are farsighted whether categorized as presbyopia or hyperopia, you can improve your ability to read or see near. It is a matter of learning the right skills and practicing to master those skills. Just like nearsightedness, once you master the skills and use it daily, it will to help you improve. This struggle is similar to improving nearsightedness, but rather than learning to relax, you may need to increase your eye muscle strength to converge through the fusion exercise. You can read about it in the fusion lesson. You may be able to improve quickly by learning and practicing the fusion lesson. Yes, you have fewer steps to deal with than a nearsighted person.

If you need more assistance, there is a program by Dr. Ray Gottlieb called Read Without Glasses Method that may be able to help. The fusion chart I created is based on the fusion chart from Dr. Ray Gottlieb. He may have some additional insight into improving farsightedness in his program. It may be worthwhile to investigate if the fusion lesson does not bring you the progress you are expecting. They are doing a special promotion right now which allows you to try out the program for thirty days and if it does not work for you then you can return the product and they will not bill you.

It is possible to improve your vision, sometimes you just need a little assistance to understand what you need to do. Hopefully, either the fusion lesson or the Read Without Glasses Method can help you understand the situation and with some practice, improve your eyesight.

Before you begin on your journey to improve your nearsightedness, I do need to set the right expectation so that you understand the great task you are about to take.

Improving your nearsightedness is about learning the skills to use your eyes correctly and using those skills to see and look at everything. It is not a complicated process, but it does require change, effort and persistence. It has to become a part of your life rather than being merely an exercise that you do half an hour a day.

In order to improve quickly, I spent three to four hours doing my work in front of a window where sunlight can shine on my book or computer, and spent every break practicing to look at objects in the distance. I spent my half hour of practice focused on the steps in the lesson and tried my best to notice how strain feels and behave. I was conscious to focus on a small area when I read and look at distance objects. I changed the way I was using my eyes. These changes helped me improve quickly.

After spending a few decades misusing my eyes, I needed to practice using my eyes correctly as much as I can. You must prepare yourself to make whatever changes are necessary to use your eyes correctly throughout the day. By being ready and willing to make these changes, it will allow you adapt to the new skills easier and improve faster.

Please read chapter 13 – New Habits For Using Your Eyes for suggestions on the habits you should develop. Then, you can put these suggestions into action as soon as possible.

An important part of eyesight is being able to recognize and interpret what we are seeing. It is not always easy to understand what you are seeing especially when someone is trying to trick you. Yes, I am talking about optical illusions. Today, we will just have some fun trying to trick our eyes and confuse our mind — let’s start with a few basic ones that you should be familiar with:

Is this a picture of a duck or a rabbit? If you look at the left side of the picture, a duck appears. If you look from the right side, a rabbit appears.

Is this a picture of a young woman or old woman? If you look at the left side of the picture, a young woman appears to be looking away from us. If you look at the center of the picture, a side profile of an old woman looking downwards appears.

Is the walls of this house facing inward or outward?
If you cover the top part of the picture, the lower part appears to be facing outwards.
If you cover the bottom part, the top part appears to be facing inwards.

Are you ready for this last one?

Wait for it.

Wait for it.

Watch out, don’t fall in!

Don’t worry, it is just an optical illusion. This person spent a lot of time and effort painting the street to create this illusion of being at the edge of a cliff. It is a great illusion!

Many of us take our eyes for granted. We do not realize how important eyesight is to our daily lives. During high school, I remember seeing students in some class fumbling around blindfolded. It did not occur to me then that they are trying to understand what it is like to be blind.

This experiment is worth doing to experience what life would be like without our eyesight. I decided to spend one hour doing my daily task blindfolded.

I set the timer for one hour and tied a cloth around my eyes. I got up and walked toward the kitchen. For some reason, things I instinctively knew to be at a certain place seemed to disappear and reappear where it stubbed my toe, grazed my knee, or bumped my head. I was lucky not to break a cup as I poured myself a some water, which overflowed and I scrambled clumsily to find a cloth to mop it up.

I wanted to prepare and clean so vegetables, but thought twice about working with a knife blindfolded. How does a blind person know if the vegetable is clean anyways? I watched TV but that was no fun without the image. I sat at my desk to start doing some work, and instinctively groped to find the computer’s on switch. What in the world was I going to do after the computer booted up? Yeah, that stumped me!

I felt around for a pen and paper, and started writing.Thoughts and ideas were pouring out. This is easy! When the alarm rang, I was surprise to see that my writing was illegible. It was like chicken scratches on paper and somehow I masterfully manage to write over the same lines on several occasions.

Doing things without eyesight is restrictive. Things I normally do without a second thought is almost impossible blindfolded. I am horribly uncoordinated without my eyesight! I have to salute every blind person who is actively living life with this incredible challenge. I tried it in my own house where know the terrain and yet I could barely function. How a blind person do daily tasks and maneuver the dangerous streets is nothing less than spectacular!

If you can not fathom how important your eyesight is, try blindfolding yourself and go about your daily tasks. It will give you a humbling perspective on how difficult life is without your eyesight.

You should not wait to improve nearsightedness! You need to start learning and practicing today. There will never be a right time to start — just whether you want to do it or not.

When I was working eight to twelve hours a day, I did not have time to care about my body and eyes. I didn’t understand that I needed to take care of my body correctly and no one advised me to do it. After some time, I was overweight and developed backaches, knee pains, headaches, foul breath, smelly feet, high nearsightedness and irritability. My quality of life went from good to poor. I had to spend years to learn, change and overcome these annoying problems. I had to learn the hard way that it is important to take care of the body.

Our eyes are important to our quality of life. My advice is to learn and take action to care for the eyes now. Eye disease is spreading rapidly throughout the world because we do not know how to use our eyes properly.

“According to Prevent Blindness America (2008)
appropriately 130 million Americans are over 40,
22 million has cataracts,
4.6 million are visually impaired or blind,
44 million have myopia or hyperopia,
4.5 million have diabetic retinopathy,
2.3 million have glaucoma,
and 2 million over 50 have macular degeneration” (PBA 2008)

Roughly one in three or four Americans over 40 develop some type of blinding eye disease. The importance of this number may not hit because you never expect health problems to happen to you. It always happens to someone else. When your number is “called” and you face the reality of having a disease, then you panic. You scramble for help, and get hit with complications and high medical bills. Don’t get caught up in this cycle of disease and cure. Prevent so you can have good eyesight to enjoy your life. Prevention does not guarantee that you will not develop a disease. It, however, drastically lower your risk so that you may avoid a major disease.

I can only steer you in the right direction — the next step is in your hands. Start preventing now!

I have been busy working on a new look for the website. I spent a lot of time programming to get things working correctly. With a week and a half of long hours, I can feel the my eyesight getting more strained and blurrier. I fell back into one bad habit — not taking breaks to rest my eyes. I worked long and hard to get the task done, and I compromised my eyesight to do it. It would have been better if I had looked away every few minutes and focused on something far away. In my haste to get it done, I forgot to take care of my eyes. It’s so easy to fall back into our old routines. I have been exercising my eyes for years, but somehow, I can still fall back into bad habits.

Good habits I want to develop when I’m working:

every ten minutes, scan the room and focus on objects far away

every half hour, close my eyes and/or massage around the eyes for a few minutes

every hour, take a break and relax my eyes (maybe look out the window) for at least 5 minutes

These are simple thing to do, but I didn’t do it. I will try writing these three things on a post-it and stick it on the monitor the next time I’m pressed to get something done.

The alarm rang and I sleepily opened my eyes. They felt sticky as if something glued them together. I blinked a few times and felt debris shifting under my eyelids. I could see, but through patches of shifting blurs as the debris moved. I rubbed my eyes and tears flowed forcing most of the stickiness out the edges of the eyes. I got up and open my eyes and the blurriness was gone. In the restroom, I pour salt water into the goggle, bent forward, placed it on my eye and blinked thirty times. I lowered the goggle and saw white things floating in the salt water. I washed the same eye again and then switched to the other eye. Even though my eyes felt clean after tearing and rubbing, I’m surprise to see how much debris get collected in the water after the wash.

Eye wash is a great way to clear debris from the eyes. It’s quick and simple.

Washing your eyes:
1. Fill the goggle with the salt solution.
2. Cup the left eye with the goggle, blink 20-30 times, and dump the water. Repeat once more for the same eye.
3. Repeat step 2 for the right eye.

Doing an eye wash is refreshing and a good method for clean out the eyes.

Note and Tips
1. If you put on moisturizing or night cream on your face, wash it off before you wash your eyes. The moisturizer may sting your eyes.
2. Keep the goggles and salt water solution clean. Wash the goggle thoroughly after each use. Wash the solution container at each refill.
3. Check the water in the goggle after each washing, I’m always surprise by how much debris is in the water even though I may not feel it in my eyes. Sometimes a thin layer of oil sits on top of the water in goggle.

When I can’t read or see something clearly, I squint to make it clear. It feels as if I’m using my eyes to grab the image. This normally sharpens the image for a second and then it becomes blurry again. Then, I quint harder to keep it clear. This cycle makes my head feels as if screws are being tightened on my temples and the back of my head. This is definitely not the right way to see something clearly. So, why did I do it every time I want to see something clearly?

Don’t Try

It’s difficult to change because I didn’t know any better. When something is difficult to do, I naturally try harder. But, our eyes doesn’t seem to work on this principle. We can’t flex the eye muscles to see better, and the harder we try the more problem it causes. If we close our eyes, take several deep breaths and relax, when we open them, the image generally looks clearer. It’s easier to see clearly with relaxed eyes than stained eyes. If trying harder doesn’t work, it makes sense not to strain and let the eyes sharpen the image by itself. This goes against my natural instincts to try harder, so I have to constantly remind myself to relax my eyes.

Letting the eyes sharpen an image by itself is easier said than done. Straining to see clearly is a habit, and it’s not easy to untrained. How does it feel not to strain or let the eyes focus naturally? I know how it feels to squint and strain to see clearly. I try many eye exercises and eye massages, but I still strain to see clearly.

Relaxed Eyes

It occurred to me one day, as I was getting ready for bed, that my eyes are most relaxed when I’m asleep. I lay down and sense how the eyes feel when I’m about to sleep. I feel the soothing warm eyelids closing, the calmness of the dark, the tensed eye muscles melting into relaxation and the relaxed eyes sinking slightly inward. I try to remember this relaxed feeling. I want to use this feeling to relax my eyes when I notice that I’m straining them.

Persistence

The challenge is to replace the squinting and straining with this relaxed-eye feeling. I constantly remind myself, “don’t force your eyes to see clearly. It’s OK that it’s blurry; let it sharpen naturally.”

This is the battle I will continue to fight until I’m free of my glasses.

Eye exercises are great for improving eyesight, but in order for it to help we must do them. Turn it into a habit can help you succeed.

Starting to do the eye exercises is easy, especially when we are excited to see the results. Enthusiasm, however, does not last. I managed to do the eye exercises for about three weeks before getting distracted by something else.

I was inspired one day as I walked away from my car. After ten steps from the car, I stopped and asked myself, “did I lock the car?” I walked back to check and I had locked it without realizing. This habit was so ingrained in my mind that I didn’t need to think about doing it. I had an Aha! moment. I need to transform the exercise into a habit. When it’s a part of my daily routine, I don’t need to allocate time to do the exercise and more importantly, I will do the exercise without having to think about it.

What did I do?

I started doing the eye exercises when I was waiting for something or wasting time. I did the exercise:

as I was on the toilet

as I stopped at a traffic light

as I was working

as I was reading

as I was watching TV

by making the exercise a part of my daily routines, it became a habit. I’m always doing the exercises so I didn’t worry about finding time to do it. This helps me to improve my eyesight without it turning into a chore.
